The Ruwanweli maha seya
The Ruwanweli maha seya /the great stupa/Mahatupa raised in the 2nd century B.C. by the great king Dhutugamunu, is famous as the greatest of the "Dagabas" at Anuradhapura. Actually it was completed by king Dhutugamunu's brother prince Saddhatissa in 144 B.C.
There are four gate houses at each of the four cardinal points mark the 'Mahathupa' outer walls, and the elephant wall up holds the Mahathupa's platform.
In the reign of Bhatikabaya ,two basement cornice ledges ,were built .
Indeed the Mahathupa was pride of king Dhutugamunu and also pride of all Sri Lankans.
